What is Bama Wesley?
Bama Wesley is the United Methodist campus ministry to The University of Alabama. While we are affiliated with the United Methodist Church, we exist to be a place for all people to discover their God-given identity while fulfilling their God-ordained purpose. Our goal is to be a place where students can encounter God and experience community during their time in Tuscaloosa.
Our Ministry Areas
Bama Wesley works through five core ministry areas:
Our weekly worship service, The Rising, takes place on Wednesday nights at 8pm. During The Rising we’ll have a time of music, preaching, and end with small group discussions (don’t worry, we’ll help you find a group no matter when in the semester you join us). We offer other worship opportunities throughout the week including a prayer and communion service on Monday evenings at 6pm.
In fellowship, our goal is basically to help you make friends. We do this through monthly events that in the past have included movie nights, holiday parties (think Halloween and Christmas), banquets/formals, and trips to local parks for hiking, ultimate, etc.
The goal of discipleship is to help you grow deeper in your faith. Whether you’ve been in church your whole life or the sight of a steeple makes you cringe, we’ve got something for you. As a new student, you’ll encounter discipleship during our Spark groups that meet after The Rising on Wednesday nights, as well as during our short-term small groups on Monday nights.
At Bama Wesley, we want to help you find ways to serve the campus and the community. This includes partnering with groups on campus and in the community for both short- and long-term service projects ranging from spending a Saturday afternoon at the animal shelter (because puppies) to our annual spring break mission trip.
At Bama Wesley, part of our goal is for you to graduate not just with a major but with a meaning. Call Discovery helps you learn what that looks like and think about how you can make a difference in the world no matter what your degree is in.
What We Believe
Bama Wesley is the United Methodist campus ministry to The University of Alabama, and our pastors are licensed or ordained clergy in the North Alabama Conference of The United Methodist Church. For more about what this means, click here.
Here’s the short version, though: no matter who you are, where you come from, what your history is (or isn’t) with the church, or what you’ve done (or think you’ve done) in the past, we believe that you are made in the image of God and that God has a plan for your life. At Bama Wesley, we want to help you recognize that image of God in which you’re made and live out that plan that God has for you. We also believe that God is big enough to handle our fears, doubts, and questions, and want to create a space where we can wrestle with those together.
Whatever you may have heard about church (or even The United Methodist Church), you have a place with us.
A Note About Holy Communion (the Eucharist)
Since we get asked, we offer a weekly opportunity on Monday evenings to spend time in prayer and receive Holy Communion (also known as the Lord’s Supper or the Eucharist). As United Methodists, we believe that the table of Holy Communion is not our table but God’s, and the meal is open to all regardless of what church you’re a member of, whether you’ve been baptized, or even whether you’re sure about whether God exists.
